INTERNSHIPS PROGRAM
The La Guapa Studio Internship Program was a 12-week immersive experience designed to provide fashion students with hands-on learning in upcycling, sustainable design, and circular fashion practices. This initiative offered participants the opportunity to explore the upcycling process while actively contributing to the development of a collection of upcycled suits and blazers from unsold inventory.
This initiative provided a practical learning environment while fostering a collaborative and innovative space where students could apply their creativity and develop skills essential for a career in sustainable fashion. Many interns have since gone on to pursue successful careers in sustainable fashion and ethical design.
Beyond technical skills, the program aimed to empower students with a deeper understanding of sustainability in fashion. By working hands-on with upcycled materials and ethical production methods, they gained insight into the real-world challenges and opportunities of circular design. The experience not only enhanced their practical skills but also encouraged them to think critically about responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and innovative design solutions that contribute to a more sustainable industry.
Throughout the program, students worked closely with me as Head Designer, gaining real-world experience in design conceptualization, product development, and sustainable garment transformation. They were involved in every stage of the process, from material selection and pattern-making to final production, while also bringing their own creative input to the collection.
As the program coordinator, I was responsible for recruiting and selecting candidates through an interview process, guiding students through the fundamentals of sustainability and upcycling, overseeing their design work, providing mentorship, and offering constructive feedback. The program ensured that participants gained valuable experience in ethical and sustainable fashion production.
